Why we bought The Old Amuri Cottage Country Hospital

After running a successful International Homestay in Christchurch since the 2011 earthquakes we had a feeling that people needed a quite place to escape from the city and find some peace and quite to rest and recover from the stresses of life.

So the hunt for the perfect property started in 2017. Many properties were inspected and discarded for various reasons until we saw this building in 2021 – three years later it was still on the market as it had significant damage from the 2018 Rotherham earthquake and had not been lived in full time for years.

We were particularly keen on an historical building with character and a story to tell, to be loving brought back to a memory of their past, whilst being dragged into a more 21st century living style.

Visitors to Rotherham can enjoy the old building, people whose parents, spouses, children were born here – all now have access to this Maternity Hospital that was closed in 1969.

In this way we will continue to contribute to the wellbeing of this special town that we call home. whilst not being classified by Heritage New Zealand, it had fallen into disrepair since the “Kaikoura” earthquakes of 2018. We bought it in late 2024, aware that it was going to be a challenge to satisfy modern living requirements. The unexpected reward has been the hugely positive feedback from the people of Rotherham who are so happy to see the grounds and building be recovered from obscurity and possible dereliction.

The hospital was once the focal point of small rural communities like Rotherham. The Doctors residence is still in the Village and is worthy of note and from the hospital the Amuri Community Health Centre was born. This provides historical continuity and community connection, and provides an association and a respect which has made the renovation all the more poignant – not to mention the funny and interesting stories we have gathered. These Matrons and Nurses, cooks, gardeners and maids were “called to serve” their communities and there is no question, they all helped to make Rotherham a better place.

As an upshot we will be building a memorial garden in memory of all those who have passed through the hospital 1922 – 1969.
